Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive social issue with far-reaching consequences for public health, particularly in its role in facilitating HIV transmission. In Yobe State, GBV—encompassing physical, sexual, and emotional abuse—creates environments in which women and girls are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection. Victims of GBV often experience coerced or unprotected sexual encounters, which increase the risk of HIV transmission (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).

In many communities in Yobe State, entrenched gender norms and power imbalances contribute to the prevalence of GBV. Cultural practices and socio-economic vulnerabilities often limit women's ability to negotiate safe sex practices, resulting in higher exposure to HIV. Moreover, the psychological trauma associated with GBV can lead to behaviors that further elevate HIV risk, such as substance abuse or reluctance to seek healthcare services. Previous studies have demonstrated a clear link between experiences of violence and increased HIV incidence, highlighting the need for integrated interventions that address both GBV and HIV prevention (Chukwu, 2024).

Efforts to reduce HIV transmission in Yobe State must therefore consider the impact of GBV on vulnerable populations. Interventions that address gender inequality, empower women, and provide support services for GBV survivors are critical for reducing HIV risk. This study aims to examine the relationship between gender-based violence and HIV transmission in Yobe State, exploring how GBV influences women's vulnerability to HIV and identifying potential intervention points for reducing this risk. By combining quantitative data on HIV prevalence with qualitative accounts of GBV experiences, the research seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of the interplay between these issues.

Statement of the Problem
In Yobe State, gender-based violence remains a significant challenge that exacerbates the risk of HIV transmission among women and girls. Despite various interventions aimed at curbing GBV, many women continue to experience abuse, which directly compromises their ability to practice safe sex and access healthcare services. The resulting increase in unprotected sexual encounters has contributed to higher HIV incidence among this vulnerable population. Additionally, the stigma and trauma associated with GBV often prevent survivors from seeking timely HIV testing and treatment, further worsening health outcomes (Lawal, 2023).

The interplay between GBV and HIV is complex, as experiences of violence can lead to a cascade of adverse health behaviors and barriers to accessing care. Traditional gender norms and power disparities in Yobe State often limit women's agency, leaving themsusceptible to coercion and exploitation. The current public health response has been insufficient in addressing the root causes of GBV and its direct impact on HIV transmission. Without targeted interventions that integrate GBV prevention and HIV risk reduction, the dual burden of violence and HIV will continue to undermine the health and well-being of women in Yobe State.

This study seeks to investigate the effect of gender-based violence on HIV transmission in Yobe State. By identifying the key factors that mediate this relationship and assessing the impact of GBV on HIV-related behaviors, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for comprehensive interventions that address both issues concurrently.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of gender-based violence and its association with HIV transmission in Yobe State.
  2. To identify the pathways through which GBV increases HIV risk among women.
  3. To recommend integrated interventions for reducing GBV and HIV transmission.

Research Questions

  1. How prevalent is gender-based violence in Yobe State, and how is it linked to HIV transmission?
  2. What mechanisms mediate the relationship between GBV and HIV risk?
  3. What interventions can effectively reduce both GBV and HIV transmission among women?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher levels of GBV are significantly associated with increased HIV transmission among women.
  2. Psychological and social factors mediate the relationship between GBV and HIV risk.
  3. Integrated interventions targeting both GBV and HIV prevention will significantly reduce HIV incidence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on women in both urban and rural areas of Yobe State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Limitations include potential underreporting of GBV and sensitivity of the subject matter.

Definitions of Terms

  • Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Abuse or violence directed at individuals based on their gender.
  • HIV Transmission: The spread of HIV from one individual to another.
  • Integrated Interventions: Strategies that address multiple related health issues simultaneously.
